Zulip organizes team conversations into channels, with separate topics within each channel. Searchable messages and direct messages support both real-time communication and asynchronous discussions.

The actively maintained software is built with Python and licensed under Apache-2.0. You can self-host it or use it as Zulip Cloud. The project offers hosting and commercial support. Self-hosted installations support SAML and OpenID Connect, among other methods, without a proprietary add-on edition.
